The Big Bus Plan - Electric, Frequent, Reliable, Easy, Great Value

In 2022 we agreed to collectively follow an 8-year transformation plan, which we’ve delivered a lot of over the past 3 years.

We’ve now agreed a more detailed plan for the period 2026-30, subject to funding.

Leicester Enhanced Bus Partnership Plan: 2026 - 2030

This has been based on significant research and consultation. It sets out the main issues and agreed priorities to transform bus travel and help in the fair and sustainable growth of Leicester.

A package of around £130m further investment and a comprehensive range of actions by all the partners will deliver the plan.

A network of 30 high quality Mainlines each with:

  • Electric buses

  • Frequency of every 15 mins or better

  • Integrated timetabling across operators

  • Enforced bus priority measures

  • Electronic information screens on bus and at all boarding stops

  • Contactless ‘best’ fare tap-on, tap-off ticketing

  • Simplified fares structure with no interchange penalty

  • Full Leicester Buses network branding throughout

  • Significantly Improved Orbital and Park & Ride lines

A transformed high quality bus network that is:

Electric, Frequent, Reliable, Easy and Great value.

For less than the cost of a single tram line!

Funding the Plan

  • The overall Plan will cost over £300m and around £10m per annum to fund.

  • We’ve already invested over £170m.

  • We hope to bring in a further £130m of investment over the next 4 years.

  • We also hope to increase our annual costs to £10m pa to keep everything going after 2030.

The Targets

  • Increase bus trips by 40%
